The United States suffered their first loss of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup, going down 2-0 at the hands of Mexico on Monday (26 February).

Jacqueline Ovalle and substitute Mayra Pelayo struck for Mexico, who topped Group A by a point over USA to reach the quarter-finals.

It was USA’s first defeat to Mexico in 14 years - and only the second time ever.

Mexico have yet to concede after three games at this tournament with 10 goals for. The States, who had already booked a spot in the last eight, had not given up a goal to a CONCACAF team in 33 games.

Ovalle opened the scoring in the 38th minute of an even contest at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Twila Kilgore - who suffered her first loss as caretaker - played all five of her substitution cards including Alex Morgan hoping to turn things around. But Pelayo denied the hosts any points with a spectacular strike from outside the box in the second minute of additional time.

Earlier, Argentina beat the Dominican Republic 3-0 for bragging rights.
