Gangwon 2024: Yuna Kim says Winter Youth Games remain invaluable for aspiring Olympians

Make no mistake, the Winter Youth Games experience will play to an eventual career advantage, **<a href="https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/vancouver-2010" target="_blank">Vancouver 2010</a>** <a href="https://olympics.com/en/sports/figure-skating/" target="_blank">figure skating</a> gold medallist <a href="https://olympics.com/en/athletes/yuna-kim" target="_blank">**Yuna Kim**</a> heeded to future Olympians.

After the women’s free skate and ahead of the Closing Ceremony of <a href="https://olympics.com/en/gangwon-2024/" target="_blank">**Gangwon 2024**</a> on Thursday (1 February), the two-time Olympian for the Republic of Korea said up-and-coming athletes ought to pounce on the opportunity to compete at the Youth Olympic Games as it will give them crucial experience under the bright lights on the big stage.

“When I was an athlete, there were no Youth Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Olympics was my first Olympic experience,” Kim said.

“I think (the Youth Olympics) is a very important opportunity as an athlete because all the athletes who are competing in the Youth Olympics today are experiencing huge nervousness at the (Youth) Olympics and will experience the main Olympics for the second time when they become adults.”

The women’s singles competition ended with Japan’s <a href="https://olympics.com/en/news/gangwon-2024-figure-skating-interview-shimada" target="_blank">Shimada Mao winning the gold medal</a>, Korean phenom **Shin Jia silver** and **Takagi Yo** bronze, also from Japan. Kim Yuseong almost made the podium, finishing fourth.

In the men’s, <a href="https://olympics.com/en/news/gangwon-2024-figure-skating-mens-free-skate-results" target="_blank">**Kim Hyungyeom** won gold</a> while the Koreans are favoured for the team event on Thursday.

Kim said she was proud of how her skaters handled themselves in a home Games amid enormous expectations to produce.

“First of all, I was excited as the Winter Youth Olympic Games is being held in my country, the Republic of Korea. It was a great opportunity to check out the skills of all the young athletes at once.

“The Youth Olympics was a great experience especially because the figure skating athletes of the Republic of Korea have improved their skills a lot and they could show their performance to the figure skating fans and sports fans around the world, so it was a very meaningful time for me as well as the athletes.”

Kim - who also won silver at <a href="https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/sochi-2014" target="_blank">**Sochi 2014**</a> \- was an ambassador for the first two editions of Winter YOG in <a href="https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/innsbruck-2012" target="_blank">**Innsbruck in 2012**</a> and <a href="https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/lillehammer-2016" target="_blank">**Lillehammer in 2016**</a>.

This event took place on 30/01/2024. Shimada Mao (JPN) claimed Gold, Shin Jia (KOR) Silver and Takagi Yo (JPN) Bronze.
