Gymnast Jessica Gadirova revealed on Sunday (15 October) that she suffered a "full tear" of her anterior cruciate knee ligament at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships earlier this month.

The reigning European all-around champion injured her knee in the warm-up for the individual all-around final in Antwerp and called it "a freak accident performing a gymnastics prep not one of my competition skills" on her Instagram page.

The Briton added, "I'm still taking time to process this myself and I know it’s going to be a tough and long journey ahead. At this point I don’t know for sure how long but I’ll be doing everything I can with the support of those around me to return to the sport I love as soon as I can."

Gadirova joins twin sister Jennifer on the injury sidelines and now faces a battle to achieve full fitness for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
