Alpine Skiing

Alpine Skiing

Alpine skiing is a winter sport, in which the athletes slalom down on snow-covered slopes with their boots fixed on ski plates with bindings. They usually rely on the lifts to go uphill to the mountain top before they start. As the name of the sport suggests, it originates in the mountainous areas of the Alps with the modern format introduced in the Alpine countries such as Switzerland, France and Italy in the 19th century. It was initially used as a means of coming down after climbing up the mountains, which is, of course, still the way it is nowadays. In the Olympic Winter Games, there are six disciplines including Downhill, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, Alpine Combined and Parallel Mixed Team.

In the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, the downhill event is excluded whilst there are Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, Alpine Combined and Parallel Mixed Team.
