Cross-Country Skiing

Dubbed the marathon of skiing, cross-country skiing is an individual/team sport, in which the athletes go through a gruelling course including uphills to achieve the records and decide the standings.

The cross-country course consists of uphill, downhill and level grounds. The athletes may run through the course either in classic – where they are required to stride along parallel lines moving their feet back and forth only – or in freestyle. The Winter Olympic disciplines are Skiathlon, Individual (Men’s 15km, Women’s 10km), Mass Start (Men’s 50km, Women’s 30km), Team Sprint, Relay and Individual Sprint. It has become a tradition to award the medals of the longest-range events – Women’s 30km and Men’s 50km – just before the Closing Ceremony.

In the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, the events include Men’s/Women’s Sprint, Individual (Men’s and Women’s 7.5km) and Mixed Relay (4x5km).
