Luge is a winter sport in which the athletes compete for better records whilst sliding down a track ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 metres. The term luge literally stands for a wooden sleigh that was used for carrying heavy loads in the snow-covered areas of Europe. It was established as a sport when sleighing became very popular in the mountains of the Alps in the 1920s, and it is still popular in Europe up until these days.
The times are recorded in milliseconds in Luge and the cumulative record from all attempts decides the standings.
In the Winter Games, the disciplines include Men’s/Women’s Single and Double, as well as Team Relay. It is crucial for the athletes to navigate through ice-clad curves over 1,000 metres, whilst sliding at an average speed of 120-160km/h and having to deal with the pressure up to seven times the G-force. Luge is basically a record sport, in which the participants make four attempts in two days for Single events / two attempts in a day for Double events.
In the Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024, Men’s/Women’s Single, Men’s/Women’s Double and Team Relay events will be contested.
