Short Track Speed Skating

Short track speed skating originated in the border region between the United States and Canada. The Republic of Korea made their international debut at the World Championship in Japan in 1983, and two years later, the national team was assembled for the first time as the sport was officially introduced at the inaugural Winter Asian Games in 1986.

In the Winter Games from Albertville 1992 to Torino 2006, Team Korea have amassed no fewer than 17 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 5 bronze medals.

Standings are more important than records in this sport, where the athletes compete in four distances: 500m, 1,000m, 1,500 and Mixed Team Relay on a 111.12m track installed in an indoor ice rink measuring 60m x 30m. Each event consists of heats, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final, with the two athletes who finish first in each stage advancing to the next round.
