Speed Skating

Speed Skating

Also known as Long Track Speed Skating, the winter sports classic is usually called Speed Skating. Conversely, Short Track Speed Skating is in many cases abbreviated as Short Track in the Republic of Korea.

The disciplines include Men’s 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10000m, 1600m Relay, 2000m Relay, 3000m Relay and Team Pursuit (3200m), as well as Women’s 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 1600m Relay, 2000m Relay, 3000m Relay and Team Pursuit (2400m). Mass Start was added to the programme of the World Championship in 2016, before Team Sprint was added in 2019. Speed skating events are staged on separate courses except for Team Pursuit and Mass Start. Athletes are required to swap their lanes – inside and outside – at certain points during the races, and to help identify the athletes they should wear armbands in different colours (white and red in individual events, different colours for each athlete in Team Pursuit).
