Naomi Osaka had the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron in the highlight of the Opening Ceremony at Tokyo 2020. 

The tennis star was the final torchbearer in a journey that had lasted over a year because of the global pandemic. 

Osaka’s hopes of an Olympic gold medal in her home Olympic Games ended in the third round when she lost to Marketa Vondrousova (CZE), who ended up winning the silver medal in the women’s singles gold medal match against Belinda Bencic (SUI).

But the image of Osaka lighting the cauldron on behalf of the Japanese host will live long in the memory.

Judo legend Teddy Riner won his third Olympic gold as part of the France squad in the mixed team final.  

Riner was denied a third individual gold as he came away with a bronze in the +100kg category against Harasawa Hisayoshi (JPN). He successfully came through the repechage to make the podium. Riner won gold in London 2012 and Rio 2016, to go with his bronze in Beijing 2008.

Boxer Mary Kom sealed her status as an icon of Indian sport when she was one of the team’s flagbearers at the Opening Ceremony at Tokyo 2020. 

Kom, who won a bronze in London 2012, missed out on a medal in Tokyo when she was narrowly beaten by Ingrit Valencia of Colombia in the round of 16. The medallists in the boxing women's fly (48-51kg) category were: Stoyka Zhelyazkova Krasteva (BUL), Buse Naz Cakiroglu (TUR), Namiki Tsukimi (JPN) and Huang Hsiao-Wen (TPE).

Mary Kom: Tokyo2020 Moments

Carissa Moore paid homage to the father of modern surfing, Duke Kahanamoku, after winning the Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020. 

Like Duke, Moore is from Hawaii and more than 100 years after he lobbied for surfing’s inclusion at the Olympics, she claimed victory as the sport finally made its first appearance at the Olympic Games. Moore shared the podium with Bianca Buitendag (RSA) and Tsuzuki Amuro (JPN).

Gabriel Medina narrowly missed out on the podium as surfing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020. 

The Brazilian produced some brilliant moves in the early rounds, but narrowly lost his semi-final to Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi and lost the bronze medal match by an even tighter margin to Owen Wright of Australia. 

Medina’s Brazil teammate Italo Ferreira took home men’s surfing’s first Olympic gold medal.

Gabriel Medina: Tokyo2020 Moments

Sky Brown became Great Britain’s youngest-ever Olympic medallist when she won bronze in the skateboarding women’s park event at Tokyo 2020. 

The 13-year-old produced a brilliant final run that even had skateboarding legend Tony Hawk out of his seat in the stands in the Ariake Urban Sports Park.  

She shared the podium with gold medallist Yosozumi Sakura (JPN) and silver medallist Hiraki Kokona (JPN).

Japanese judo siblings Abe Uta and Abe Hifumi were crowned Olympic champions within minutes of each other on a memorable night for the host nation at the Nippon Budokan. 

Abe Uta took gold in the women’s -52kg category defeating Amandine Buchard (FRA), and she was able to watch as her brother Abe Hifumi won his gold medal contest in the men’s -66kg category at Tokyo 2020 against Vazha Margvelashvili (GEO).

Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic won Olympic gold in the tennis women’s singles at Tokyo 2020, and followed it up with a silver in the women’s doubles. 

With compatriot Roger Federer out of Tokyo 2020 through injury, Bencic beat Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in a tightly-contested women's singles gold medal match, and a day later teamed up with Viktorija Golubic in the women’s doubles gold medal match, but they were denied gold by the Czech pair of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova.

Belinda Bencic: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

Eliud Kipchoge enhanced his legendary distance running status with gold in the men’s marathon on the final day of competition at Tokyo 2020. Kenya's Kipchoge successfully defended the title he won in Rio, and finished over a minute clear of Abdi Nageeye (NED), who took silver, and bronze medallist Bashir Abdi (BEL).

Pole vault sensation Armand Duplantis won Olympic gold in amazing fashion at Tokyo 2020.  Sweden's Duplantis cleared 6.02 metres at the first attempt, a vault that saw him go over the bar by an incredible distance. The 21-year-old was the only athlete over 6 metres, with Christopher Nilsen of the USA taking silver and Brazil’s Thiago Braz taking bronze.

Armand Duplantis: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

American swimmer Caeleb Dressel joined Michael Phelps and Mark Spitz as the only male swimmers to win at least three individual gold medals at an Olympic Games, and finished Tokyo 2020 with five golds in total. 

Dressel won the 50m and 100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly, and was a key member of the 4x100m medley and 4x100m freestyle relay squads that also claimed gold for the USA.

Caeleb Dressel: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

Slovenian basketball superstar Luka Doncic inspired his side to a fourth-place finish in their first-ever appearance in the Olympic basketball tournament. 

Doncic made an immediate impact with 48 points in their opening game against Argentina. He claimed a triple-double in the semi-final against France, but was injured in the closing stages and Slovenia lost by a point, then Australia proved too strong in the bronze medal game.

Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah produced a sprinting clean-sweep in the Olympic Stadium at Tokyo 2020. The 29-year-old took gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to eclipse her performance in Rio, where she won gold in the 100m and 200m and a silver in the 4x100m relay.

Slovenia’s Janja Garnbret lived up to her pre-event billing as the best in the world by winning gold in sport climbing women’s combined as the sport made its Olympic debut. 

The 22-year-old secured victory by a massive margin, finishing over 30 points clear of the Japanese pair of Nonaka Miho and Noguchi Akiyo.

British diver Tom Daley finally won Olympic gold at his fourth Olympic Games.  

After winning bronze medals in London 2012 and Rio 2016, the 27-year-old climbed to the top of the podium with victory in the men’s synchronised 10m platform along with Matty Lee. The podium was completed by silver medallists Cao Yuan/Chen Aisen (CHN) and  bronze medallists Aleksandr Bondar/Viktor Minibaev (ROC).  

Daley capped a memorable Olympic Games with a bronze in the 10m platform event, sharing the podium with gold medallist Cao Yuan (CHN) and silver medallist Yang Jian (CHN).

Tom Daley: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

Brazilian Italo Ferreira won surfing’s first ever Olympic gold medal after a thrilling competition at the Tsurigasaki Surfing Beach. 

Ferreira even overcame a broken board at the start of the final to claim a stunning victory over Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi.

Japan’s Horigome Yuto made Olympic history by winning the first ever gold medal in skateboarding, his victory coming in the skateboarding men’s street final.  

The 22-year-old grew up just a few miles away from the Ariake Urban Sports Park and honed his skills there after being introduced to the sport by his father. He shared the podium with Kelvin Hoefler (BRA) and Jagger Eaton (USA).

Horigome Yuto: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

Badminton star PV Sindhu became the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals when she claimed bronze at Tokyo 2020 to go with her silver from Rio 2016. 

The 26-year-old was beaten in her semi-final by Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei, who ended up with silver after losing to Chen Yu Fei of the People’s Republic of China in the gold medal match.

PV Sindhu: Tokyo 2020 Medal Moments

USA's Simone Biles added to her Olympic medal collection at Tokyo 2020 with a silver in the artistic gymnastics women’s team event, alongside teammates Sunisa Lee, Grace Mc Callum, and Jordan Chiles, and a bronze in the balance beam.  

But the medals are not what her appearance at Tokyo 2020 will be remembered for. 

After one vault in the team final, Biles stepped aside to concentrate on her physical and mental health. Despite qualifying for all the apparatus finals, she only appeared in the final one, the balance beam, where Guan Chenchen (CHN) took gold and Tang Xijing (CHN) silver.

Simone Biles: Artistic Gymnastics - Tokyo 2020 Top Highlights and Medal Moments

Yang Qian of the People’s Republic of China claimed the first gold medal of Tokyo 2020. Her shock victory in the women’s 10m air rifle came on the first morning of competition, just hours after the Opening Ceremony. She shared the podium with Anastasiia Galashina (ROC) and Nina Christen (SUI). 

And the 21-year-old, who was ranked outside the World’s top 50 before the Olympic Games, wasn’t finished. She partnered with Yang Haoran to win gold in the 10m air rifle mixed team.

Yang Qian: Tokyo2020 Medal Moments

Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus took Tokyo 2020 by storm, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze in the pool. 

The 20-year-old enjoyed some epic battles with American superstar Katie Ledecky, and her victory in the 400m freestyle sparked wild celebrations from her coach Dean Boxall that went viral.

13-year-old Brazilian Rayssa Leal took Tokyo 2020 by storm as skateboarding made its Olympic debut.

Leal, nicknamed "The Skating Fairy," was the youngest competitor in the women's street skateboarding final packed with drama, thrills, and spills. Nishiya Momiji won the gold, sharing the podium with Rayssa Leal and Nakayama Funa.
