Athletics: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone out of World Championships

American [athletics](https://olympics.com/en/sports/athletics/) star [**Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone**](https://olympics.com/en/athletes/sydney-mclaughlin) will not compete at the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, according to an Instagram story posted Friday (11 August 2023).

"I am sad to share that I must withdraw from this year's World Championships meet in Budapest," wrote McLaughlin-Levrone. "After consulting with my doctors and coaches, I need to take care of a minor knee issue so that I can be fully healthy for next year's Paris Olympics. I look forward to seeing everyone back on the track soon."

McLaughlin-Levrone is the reigning Olympic and world champion in the women's 400m hurdles and holds the world record in the event. This season, the 24-year-old had been focusing on the 400m flat and was considered a major contender for gold in the event at the global event after running a world lead time at the U.S. Championships in early July.

The World Athletics Championships are set to begin Saturday (19 August) in Budapest.
