Once again, <a href="https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/en/results/football/olympic-schedule-and-results.htm" target="_blank">football</a> at the Olympic Games has delivered.

There were thrills, spills, and history was made as Brazil became only the fifth team to retain the men's Olympic title.

Dani Alves won his 43rd major honour, with just the World Cup missing from his trophy cabinet, while Malcom became an unexpected hero for Brazil.

1: Marco Asensio's resurgence

Real Madrid star Marco Asensio has had a relatively quiet past couple of seasons domestically, thanks in part to an ACL injury.

But the 25-year-old Spaniard delivered in style for his nation in Japan.

As one of the three over-age players named to their squad, he was a creative hub for the duration of the tournament, while his late winner against Japan in the semis put Spain into the final.

Despite having to settle for the silver medal, Asensio has shown glimpses of why Real Madrid fans should be excited going into the new season.

2: Dani Alves' 43rd major title

At 38 years old, Dani Alves came into the Olympics as the most senior member of the Brazil squad.

But the Sao Paulo player showed that he hasn't lost any of his competitive spirit, captaining the team to a second-consecutive Olympic gold.

Alves was more than just a leader.

His attacking instincts lead to Brazil's first goal in the final, while his energetic display on the wing provided an attacking threat alongside defensive stability.

3: Spain 5-2 Côte d'Ivoire

The quarter-final clash between Spain and Côte d'Ivoire will go down in history as an Olympic classic.

At 1-1 going into the final stages of the game, **Max-Alain Gradel** scored what many thought was the winning goal.

But Spain had other ideas as late substitute **Rafa Mir** scored seconds before the full-time whistle to take the game into extra-time.

The Spaniards ultimately won the game 5-2 in a match that was thrilling from start to finish.

4: Free-flowing Mexico

London 2012 gold medallists Mexico came into Tokyo 2020 looking to improve on their performance at Rio 2016, where they failed to make it out of the group stages.

Playing without fear, the central Americans were one of the most entertaining teams of the tournament, scoring 17 goals including a thrilling six against Republic of Korea.

Mexico carried that form through the knockout stages, where they ended up with a well-deserved bronze after defeating hosts Japan 3-1.

Sebastian Cordova and Ernesto Alexis Rojas were the pick of their goal scorers with three each overall.

5: Late addition, late goal for Malcom

Brazil's Malcom was one of the surprise packages at Tokyo 2020 in 2021

The Zenit Saint Petersburg man <a href="https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/en/news/malcom-barcelona-zenit-brazilian-hero-gold-tokyo" target="_blank">was not initially in the squad</a> but received a late call up just eight days before their opening game.

And what an addition he was. The attacker came off the bench late on in the final, and deep into extra-time scored the winning goal after an instant impact.

One last look

After clinching a 43rd major title, Tokyo 2020 has very much been the Dani Alves show.

But it was also the year of surprises.

Germany and France crashing out of the group stages left the competition wide open - with the likes of Egypt, Republic of Korea, Côte d'Ivoire, and New Zealand making it into the quarter-finals.

And for some players, like Asensio and Malcom, it could be the tournament that kickstarts their return to the top table of football.

Hello Paris 2024

France will automatically qualify for the Olympic Games as the home nation, and they'll be keen to make amends after failing to make it out of the group in Tokyo.

The Brazilians have shown why they are the team to beat going into Paris 2024, and will surely be backing themselves for a third consecutive gold.

Meanwhile, Mexico made a significant improvement from Rio to Tokyo, and expect be a medal threat once again.
